MANDATED REPORTING
The Child Advocacy Center of East Alabama has included this page because mandated reporting is one of the best ways we can make sure the children in Lee and Macon Counties are safe.  You only have to suspect child abuse to report it.  DHR and Law Enforcement are the agencies that investigate the allegations.  If a mandated reporter makes a report and it turns out not to be true, the reporter is protected by law.  However, if a mandated reporter does not report abuse, he or she can be charged with breaking the law- resulting in a fine and possible jail time.  Sometimes the governing board of the discipline will also revoke the practitioner's license.  The following people in the following occupations are mandated reporters in the state of Alabama:

Doctors, Surgeons, Medical Examiners, Coroners, Dentists, Osteopaths, Optometrists, Chiropractors, Podiatrists, Nurses, Pharmacists, School Teachers, School Personnel, Law Enforcement Officers, Law Enforcement Officials, Social Workers, Day Care Workers, Day Care Employees, Mental Health Professionals, and any person that renders aid or medical assistance to any child when the child is known or suspected to be a victim of abuse or neglect.
